China has spoken out against Donald Trump’s recent threat of imposing tariffs on countries supporting the ‘anti-American’ policies of the BRICS nations. A Foreign Ministry representative, Mao Ning, defended the BRICS group, describing its inclusive and cooperative nature, and also reiterated China’s strong stance against tariff wars and trade coercion. Trump’s warning, delivered via Truth Social, suggested a 10% tariff on any nation aligning with what he views as anti-American positions within BRICS, though he did not specify the policies he opposed. This announcement was made just before the US government was scheduled to send out tariff-related notifications. BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, aims to alter global power structures and foster a multipolar world order. Trump’s announcement coincided with the BRICS summit hosted by Brazil, where a joint statement expressed concerns about the rise of unilateral tariffs. Ongoing trade talks between the US and some BRICS members, like India, may be affected by Trump’s recent statements. Earlier, Trump had suggested a 100% tariff on nations backing a shared currency initiative. Economists have also noted the potential for increased costs for American consumers due to Trump’s tariff policies.
