President Donald Trump found himself at the center of online criticism this past weekend due to his handling of information concerning a shooting at Brown University. His contradictory social media posts about whether a suspect had been apprehended led to a flurry of mockery and accusations of being poorly informed. Trump initially announced on Truth Social that the individual responsible for the Brown University shooting was in custody, stating, ‘The suspect is in custody.’ However, this announcement was rapidly followed by another message that seemed to reverse the information: ‘The Brown University Police reversed their previous statement The suspect is NOT in custody.’ This sequence of posts ignited a firestorm online. Many internet users pointed out that official police statements never confirmed an arrest, suggesting Trump’s initial tweet was an unverified claim. While a segment of users defended Trump, arguing he corrected himself swiftly, a larger group expressed concern over the accuracy of his real-time updates. Police officials later confirmed that a person of interest was briefly detained and then released, emphasizing that the shooter has not been caught. The violence tragically resulted in two deaths and serious injuries to eight others. The FBI is providing assistance to local authorities.
