Lahore witnessed scenes of intense clashes on Friday as activists of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) began a march towards Islamabad. The protest, dubbed the ‘Gaza March,’ reportedly resulted in casualties and numerous injuries to police officers. TLP leader Saad Rizvi stated that Punjab police firing led to at least 11 TLP workers losing their lives and over 24 sustaining injuries, further alleging that medical aid was withheld from some injured individuals. These assertions could not be independently verified, and official police accounts have not corroborated any deaths. The confrontation ignited after Friday prayers when thousands of TLP supporters, armed with sticks and rods, set off from their Lahore base. Law enforcement responded by establishing barricades and deploying tear gas at multiple locations, including Chauburji and Shahdara, in an effort to contain the march. However, the protesters managed to overcome these obstacles and continued their progression toward the capital. Disturbing images emerged of TLP supporters on the Orange Line Metro track, reportedly throwing stones at police, injuring several personnel. Social media content also suggested that protesters took control of government vehicles, including construction equipment, to advance their cause. The situation grew particularly volatile near Azadi Chowk, with damage inflicted upon police vehicles and officers injured. Police sources confirmed significant injuries among their ranks. The TLP maintained its account of worker injuries and fatalities, emphasizing alleged police aggression. In the aftermath, 110 TLP activists were taken into custody, facing charges related to assaulting law enforcement and destroying public property, which the TLP has denied. Government measures to counter the protest included blocking access routes to Islamabad and implementing internet disruptions.
