Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes in expressing deep sadness over the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died at the age of 80 in Koothattukulam, Kerala. Odinga succumbed to a heart attack experienced during his customary morning walk. PM Modi remembered Odinga as a “cherished friend of India” and recalled their personal encounters from his days as Chief Minister of Gujarat. Odinga had arrived in Kerala for specialized Ayurvedic treatment and was at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre when he collapsed. Despite swift medical attention, he could not be saved. His remains are currently being held at Deva Matha Hospital in Koothattukulam. In a social media message, PM Modi stated, “Deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend and former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr Raila Odinga. He was a towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.” Modi emphasized Odinga’s significant admiration for Indian culture, values, and traditional medicine, particularly Ayurveda, which he observed had a beneficial effect on his daughter. This appreciation, Modi noted, contributed to Odinga’s efforts in fostering stronger India-Kenya relations. The Prime Minister conveyed his profound condolences to Odinga’s family, friends, and the entire nation of Kenya. Odinga had been in the region for six days with his family, following a routine of wellness and treatment. The cardiac arrest reportedly occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. during his walk, and he was transported to the hospital in a critical state. Odinga was a towering figure in Kenyan politics for over four decades, serving as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, a period instrumental in national reconciliation and significant constitutional reforms. His reputation for powerful speeches and strong grassroots engagement made him a central figure in Kenya’s democratic journey. He played a crucial role in the post-election violence resolution of 2007–08 through a power-sharing agreement, championing dialogue and reform. As a long-standing opposition leader and head of the Orange Democratic Movement, Odinga was a consistent presidential candidate and a dominant force in Kenyan politics. His career was marked by both spirited political rivalries and a dedication to promoting an inclusive political system. Kenyan Embassy representatives in New Delhi have been notified and are working with Kerala state officials and the hospital for the repatriation of Odinga’s body. Local leaders and the Kenyan diaspora have expressed their shock and grief.
