The SCO Summit, taking place in Tianjin, marks a significant event with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance, representing his first visit to China in seven years. The summit, which will host 20 world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, is the 25th of its kind. The choice of Tianjin as the venue is noteworthy. Tianjin, the third-largest urban area in China, plays a critical role as a port city. From a history of foreign influence to its current status as a trade and innovation hub, Tianjin’s transformation is remarkable. Its port ranks among the world’s largest, and it is home to advanced technology and major international companies. The city also experienced a tragic industrial accident in 2015. China’s decision to host the summit in Tianjin is possibly a strategic move with broad implications. PM Modi and Xi Jinping will meet, aiming to improve relations between India and China. Key topics include the US’s tariffs, trade tensions, and boundary issues between the two countries. There is an expectation to resume direct flights and streamline visa procedures. PM Modi is anticipated to hold discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on critical matters such as Trump’s tariffs, the Ukraine conflict, and the situation in Gaza. Prominent attendees include PM Modi, President Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, along with Turkish, Egyptian, and Pakistani leaders. Representatives from Southeast Asian countries and leaders from countries like Cuba and the Democratic Republic of Congo will also be present, showcasing China’s intention to strengthen regional ties and challenge the Western-led global order. The summit provides a stage for China to promote the Belt and Road Initiative and expand ties with Central Asia and Eurasia.
