The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is spearheading the enhancement of India’s air-to-air missile capabilities with the development of the Astra Mark 2, capable of striking targets beyond 200 kilometers. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is poised to procure approximately 700 of these advanced missiles, a move that will significantly amplify its BVR combat effectiveness. This initiative is a direct result of ongoing efforts to bolster indigenous defense manufacturing and ensure technological parity. The Astra Mark 2 will arm India’s fighter jets, including the Sukhoi and LCA fleets, enabling them to engage enemy aircraft from substantial standoff distances. This strategic acquisition reflects India’s commitment to a robust and self-sufficient defense ecosystem, ready to address contemporary security challenges.
