The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided various places in Tamil Nadu on Thursday. This action has been taken in the context of a new case of money laundering against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and Stalin Government Minister Senthil Balaji. According to official sources, the case is related to alleged irregularities in the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC), which holds a monopoly of liquor trade in the state.

ED action has been taken earlier also
Senthil Balaji was arrested by the ED in a case of money laundering in June 2023. However, on 26 September 2024, the Supreme Court granted him bail in the case. The matter was related to alleged irregularities in recruitment in the Transport Department. Three days after getting bail, the state government again restored him to the post of minister and assigned him the charge of the Department of Power, Prohibition and Excise, which he had earlier. Balaji was the minister of this department from May 2021 to June 2023, but he was removed from the post after his arrest.

ED allegations and state government’s attitude
The Enforcement Directorate had earlier registered a case under the Money Laundering Prevention Act (PMLA). In this case, he was accused of cash scam while working as Transport Minister between 2011-2015. At that time he was part of the AIADMK government led by CM Jayalalithaa. The Supreme Court granted him bail in this case in September 2024, after which he became a minister again on 29 September 2024.

The ED alleged in the charge sheet filed in 2023 that Balaji got illegal benefit using his influence. The agency says that he planned to raise illegal funds with the help of his brother, personal assistant and transport department officials. However, the Tamil Nadu government says that the matter is inspired by political vengeance and the allegations made by the ED are false.
