President Donald Trump has signaled a forthcoming, lengthy suspension of asylum claims within the United States. Addressing reporters, Trump voiced his strong opinion that a considerable number of asylum seekers are undesirable, stating, “Most of them are no good.” He specifically mentioned people from countries like Somalia, which he described as lacking functional governments and descending into violence, asserting that such individuals should not be permitted to enter the U.S.
Trump indicated that the pause would be extensive, responding to questions about its duration with “For a long time. No time limit.” He reasoned that the country is already burdened and has no need for individuals from nations he considers unstable or hostile. The President hinted that the policy could encompass more than 19 countries, which he characterized as “crime-ridden” and not contributing positively.
The President also launched a forceful attack on the immigration policies of the preceding Biden administration. He accused them of harming the country by allowing entry to immigrants who were “totally unchecked and unvetted.” Trump specifically called out former Vice President Kamala Harris for her oversight of border security, suggesting her policies allowed “anyone and everyone” to enter.
This stance is further underscored by the Department of Homeland Security’s indefinite suspension of immigration applications for Afghan nationals. The recent fatal shooting of a National Guard member near the White House has intensified the debate. Officials have stated that the suspect’s immigration process began under the Biden administration, placing responsibility for the tragic outcome on that administration’s policies. The other injured National Guard member continues to fight for his life.
