A UK team from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) visited Tihar Jail in Delhi as part of ongoing efforts related to the extradition of Indian fugitives, including Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi. Jail No. 4, which houses first-time and high-security inmates, was the focus of the inspection. According to sources, the team assessed facilities and security, and spoke with inmates. The visit is connected to concerns raised by British courts regarding conditions in Indian prisons, which have come up during extradition hearings. India has given assurances to the UK about the safe and lawful treatment of extradited individuals, guaranteeing they will not be subject to illegal interrogation. The UK team consisted of four officials, accompanied by two officers from the British High Commission. They inspected high-security areas and spoke to inmates. The visit took place on July 16. Jail No. 4, known as the “Mulaija Jail,” separates first-time offenders from seasoned criminals to help their rehabilitation. There are plans to establish a high-security section within the jail to accommodate high-profile or sensitive prisoners. India has submitted 178 extradition requests to various countries, with 20 to the UK, as of 2024. Vijay Mallya faces allegations of defaulting on over Rs 9,000 crore in bank loans. Nirav Modi is the central figure in the Rs 13,800 crore Punjab National Bank fraud. Nirav Modi has been declared a fugitive economic offender, and his extradition has been approved by a UK court.
