A violent incident has resulted in the death of Shivank Avasthi, a 20-year-old Indian doctoral student, near the University of Toronto Scarborough. Police were called to the area of Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road on Tuesday following reports of a shooting. Officers found Avasthi with a fatal gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead at the site. The assailants had fled the location prior to the arrival of emergency services. The university campus was briefly placed under a security lockdown while law enforcement conducted an extensive search of the surrounding areas. This incident tragically marks Toronto’s 41st homicide this year, intensifying concerns about student safety. Discussions among students have highlighted persistent issues such as insufficient lighting, a scarcity of surveillance cameras, and a general lack of security presence, which have been raised with university administration multiple times. The limited updates on the suspects and the motive have heightened anxieties, with many students expressing fear about returning to campus, particularly after dark. Avasthi was also recognized for his contributions to the University of Toronto Scarborough cheerleading team, where he was known for his encouraging nature and supportive demeanor. The team has shared heartfelt tributes, mourning the loss of a ‘beloved Maroon’ and remembering his positive influence.
