In an unexpected move, FIFA President Gianni Infantino joined US President Donald Trump at a summit for peace in Gaza, held in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. The gathering, which drew leaders and diplomats, also included the head of global football, sparking curiosity about his involvement.
Infantino explained that his presence was at the personal invitation of President Trump. He articulated FIFA’s readiness to contribute to the peace process, stating, “FIFA is here to help, to assist and to put ourselves at disposal for whatever we can do to make sure that this peace process comes to fruition and to the best possible end.” This involvement highlights Infantino’s deepening focus on geopolitical issues, particularly the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Infantino has recently become more vocal, urging the football community to back peace initiatives in the Middle East. After a recent Israel-Hamas ceasefire, he commended the US-negotiated agreement and specifically praised President Trump’s crucial role, suggesting he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.
At the summit, Infantino emphasized football’s capacity to foster hope and unity. He committed FIFA to aiding in the reconstruction of Gaza’s football facilities as part of the post-conflict recovery. Plans include rebuilding pitches, supplying equipment, organizing competitions, and establishing a fund for Palestinian football infrastructure. Infantino stressed the profound impact football has on children’s hope.
The relationship between Infantino and Trump has been evident through a series of public appearances since their initial meeting in 2018. Their continued connection includes joint events and a notable meeting in the Oval Office where Trump received a replica World Cup trophy. Infantino’s recent relocation to Miami, Trump’s former residence, further underscores their ongoing rapport and their alignment on initiatives like the 2026 World Cup.
