The catalyst for the Moroccan protests occurred in mid-September, when eight pregnant women died in a government hospital in Agadir due to overcrowding, staff shortages, and lack of equipment. This tragic event exposed the deficiencies of the Moroccan healthcare system. The country has only 7.7 doctors per 10,000 people, far below the WHO guideline of 25. In areas like Agadir, this number drops to 4.4 doctors per 10,000. The government’s focus on massive spending on football stadiums and infrastructure, with over $5 billion earmarked for the 2025 Africa Cup and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, further fueled the anger, especially among rural youth still recovering from the 2023 Al Haouz earthquake.
