An Israeli strike near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza resulted in the deaths of five Al Jazeera journalists. This event marks one of the most lethal attacks on media personnel during the Israel-Gaza conflict. Those killed included Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, alongside camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal, as well as Moamen Aliwa. The Israeli Military asserted that Anas al-Sharif was a Hamas operative and the leader of a Hamas cell. The IDF claimed that documents and intelligence from Gaza, including personnel records, training materials, and salary information, supported this assertion. Al Jazeera Media Network condemned the killings as a direct assault on press freedom and decried the escalating violence against civilians in Gaza. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that since October 7, 2023, at least 186 journalists have been killed. The strike occurred shortly after the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had indicated to international media that he had authorized greater access for foreign journalists into the Gaza Strip. In a final social media post, Anas al-Sharif described intensifying Israeli aggression in Gaza City and stated that he believed Israel had succeeded in silencing him.
