As the Israel-Hamas war nears its second year, the Gaza Strip faces a humanitarian crisis. The destruction has resulted in over 60,000 deaths and numerous injuries. A recent report published in The Lancet reveals a grim reality: common diseases are now a major cause of death in Gaza, in addition to the ongoing issues of bombings and famine. The report highlights the spread of drug-resistant infections, which are prolonging illnesses, worsening health outcomes, and increasing the risk of fatalities. This study, featured in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, identifies a substantial outbreak of multi-drug-resistant bacteria in Gaza since October 2023. This means that many common antibiotics are no longer effective. The study analyzed over 1,300 samples from Al-Ahli Hospital, mostly from those injured by attacks. It was found that many of these samples contained bacteria resistant to multiple drugs. The WHO has stated that medical supplies are urgently needed to avert further crisis. Many hospitals are overwhelmed and lack essential resources. The study emphasizes that the rise in drug-resistant illnesses will worsen if the attacks on hospitals and the war continue.
