The European Union imposed a $3.5 billion fine on Google, due to anti-competitive conduct in the online advertising technology sector. The decision has ignited strong disapproval from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who deemed the penalty unfair and stated that his administration would not tolerate such ‘discriminatory’ measures. The European Commission (EC) determined that Google had breached EU antitrust rules by favoring its own online ad tech services, thereby impeding competition within the industry. In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump claimed that the fine siphons off funds that could be used for American investments and job opportunities. He further noted that this fine is in addition to several other penalties and taxes levied on Google and other U.S. tech firms. Trump threatened to invoke ‘Section 301’ to eliminate the fine imposed on American companies, while also mentioning that Google previously paid $13 billion in ‘false claims and charges.’ He urged the EU to cease these practices immediately.
