The White House has condemned the government shutdown, laying the blame squarely on the Democratic party. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declared that Democrats in Congress have “officially shut down” the government. She explained that House Republicans presented a nonpartisan bill to extend existing government funding until November 21st, but it was rejected by nearly all Democratic senators. Leavitt pointed out the similarity of this bill to one previously approved by Democrats. She noted that the Democrats had passed equivalent funding measures numerous times when they controlled the majority during the Biden administration. Leavitt accused the Democratic party of practicing “pure partisan politics.” She criticized their position on providing taxpayer-funded healthcare for undocumented immigrants, arguing it was unaffordable given the nation’s financial situation. The shutdown occurred because Congress failed to pass a funding measure. Both parties are vying to avoid responsibility; Republicans seek agreement on a funding extension, while Democrats are unwilling to proceed without significant concessions. Democratic leaders Jeffries and Schumer have placed the blame on President Trump and Republicans.
