The Israeli Defense Forces intercepted a boat carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg and other activists en route to Gaza. The vessel, named ‘Madleen,’ was redirected to Israel, with all passengers reported to be safe. According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, those onboard were provided with refreshments during their journey.
The ‘Madleen’ was part of the Freedom Flotilla, carrying supplies. The Israeli Foreign Ministry indicated that the activists would return to their home countries. The ministry stated that the aid on the yacht was minimal compared to the aid already entering Gaza through official channels. The aid on the yacht will be transferred to Gaza through proper humanitarian avenues.
The Israeli Navy communicated with the boat via standard channels. The Gaza Freedom Flotilla Coalition reported that the flotilla was intercepted by the IDF around 3 a.m. Activists reported that they lost contact with the ‘Madleen’ and that they were attacked by drones that sprayed a substance. Communications were jammed, and disturbing sounds were played on radios. The activists had prepared videos anticipating potential detention.
The Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that he ordered the interception to prevent the boat from reaching Gaza due to the blockade. Before the interception, the activists reported being approached by speedboats that they thought belonged to the IDF.
