Preparations are underway for significant trade talks between India and the US, scheduled to begin in New Delhi on December 10. The core agenda revolves around propelling the negotiations for a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) forward. Initially, the two countries had set their sights on completing the first phase of the BTA by the fall of 2025. However, evolving trade dynamics, including past tariff measures enacted by the US, have necessitated further dialogue. Government intelligence points to the confirmed commencement of these vital discussions. India’s chief negotiator, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal, has expressed considerable hope that a consensus on the initial tranche of the agreement will be reached within the current calendar year, citing substantial progress despite global trade uncertainties. The BTA’s overarching ambition is to more than double bilateral trade, aspiring to reach $500 billion by 2030 from the present $191 billion.
