Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s forthcoming visit to Oman is set to be a pivotal moment in strengthening India’s strategic partnership with a key West Asian nation. Oman holds a special place in India’s foreign policy as a dependable Muslim ally that has offered unwavering support, particularly during the critical 1971 war. This enduring solidarity has fostered robust cooperation in defense, trade, and energy.
Regional powers, including Pakistan, are closely monitoring this high-level engagement. The consistently strong relationship between India and Oman is a cornerstone of Gulf diplomacy, and this visit is expected to build further on that foundation. It also serves to commemorate seven decades of established diplomatic ties between the two countries, highlighting a long-standing tradition of mutual respect and collaboration.
Following the Omani Sultan’s visit to India, PM Modi’s trip aims to accelerate bilateral cooperation. A significant aspect of this partnership is Oman’s provision of rare access to its Duqm port for the Indian Navy. This strategic maritime access enhances India’s logistical capabilities and operational reach in the Indian Ocean, a crucial area for global trade and security. Oman has a unique track record of enabling joint military exercises with all branches of the Indian armed forces.
The consistent support from Oman within international forums, especially concerning issues of terrorism, underscores the depth of this alliance. The presence of a thriving Indian community in Oman further enriches the bilateral relationship. On the economic front, the visit is anticipated to pave the way for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aiming to provide a structured framework for the growing trade volume, which reached USD 10.61 billion in 2024-25. This partnership is geared towards future growth and investment.
