India has firmly communicated to China that Arunachal Pradesh is an intrinsic and inseparable part of Indian territory, a stance that is self-evident and immutable. This declaration by the Ministry of External Affairs comes after China commented on the detention of an Indian national from Arunachal Pradesh at Shanghai International Airport. The MEA spokesperson reiterated that no external assertions can alter this fundamental reality.
The incident that sparked this diplomatic exchange involved a UK-based resident of Arunachal Pradesh traveling to Japan via Shanghai. She reportedly faced scrutiny from Chinese immigration officials who allegedly questioned her Indian passport and made comments asserting territorial claims over Arunachal Pradesh. The traveler was held at the airport for an extended period.
India has lodged formal complaints in response to the event, citing a possible violation of international travel regulations. The Indian consulate in Shanghai reportedly intervened to assist the traveler. China, however, has denied any wrongdoing, with its Foreign Ministry spokesperson stating that procedures were followed and the passenger’s rights were upheld. China has also reasserted its historical claims to the region, which it designates as “Zangnan.”
