In response to former President Trump’s remarks and potential tariff increases, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has defended India’s imports of oil from Russia. The MEA stated that India’s decisions are driven by the need to ensure affordable and reliable energy supplies for its citizens and that this is a sovereign decision. The MEA underscored that India’s actions are rooted in protecting its national interests, a response aimed at countering criticism from both the United States and the European Union. The MEA also pointed out that the EU’s and the US’s trade relationship with Russia far exceeds that of India’s, thus making the criticism unjustified. The MEA further stated that the global market situation necessitates these imports. The Ministry also clarified that India’s trade practices are not a secret, but are market-driven choices.
