The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Dr. Ravindra Chnadran Ram Goolam, and his spouse Veena Ramgoolam are visiting India for a period of eight days. This visit represents the first bilateral visit of Prime Minister Ramgoolam to India during his current term in office.
The Prime Minister previously visited India in May 2014 to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The relationship between India and Mauritius has been strong for many years, predating Mauritius’ independence in 1968. This partnership has grown significantly, encompassing trade, investment, education, and cultural exchange.
India has become a major trading partner for Mauritius.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, commenting on the visit, highlighted the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and emphasized the importance of Mauritius in the context of the Global South. A notable outcome of the visit is the decision to offer a special economic package to Mauritius. This package incorporates various elements, such as the development of the Port of Port Louis, assistance for the surveillance of the Chagos Marine Protected Area, and a blend of financial aid through grants and lines of credit for significant projects. Discussions are also underway between the central banks of both countries, aimed at bolstering cooperation.
