
Tragedy struck in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia on September 29, 2025, as a building under construction at an Islamic boarding school collapsed, leading to the death of at least one student and the possible entombment of 65 others. The incident occurred while students were participating in prayer services. A rescue operation is ongoing to locate and extract those buried beneath the rubble. Upon receiving reports of the collapse, rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene, providing immediate assistance to the trapped students. During the night, eight students were rescued from the wreckage. The authorities are concerned that the death toll will increase as more bodies are still trapped. Families and relatives of the students have gathered at hospitals, anxiously awaiting updates on the rescue efforts. The injured are primarily male students in classes 7 through 11, between 12 and 17 years old. The students were offering afternoon prayers in a building undergoing construction when it collapsed. Female students were praying in another section and were able to escape. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
