In a significant diplomatic move, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have formally recognized Palestinian statehood. This action is likely to be met with resistance from the United States and will likely complicate relations with Israel.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer shared a post on X, announcing the formal recognition of the State of Palestine by the United Kingdom. This move is intended to revive the hopes of peace for both Palestinians and Israelis and support a two-state solution.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also utilized X to confirm Canada’s recognition of Palestine as a state.
The Canadian PM further stated, “It is in this context that Canada recognises the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel. Canada does so as part of a co-ordinated international effort to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution. While Canada is under no illusions that this recognition is a panacea, this recognition is firmly aligned with the principles of self-determination and fundamental human rights reflected in the United Nations Charter, and the consistent policy of Canada for generations.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also issued a statement in support of recognizing Palestinian statehood.
Despite the criticism from Israel and the United States, the UK Prime Minister emphasized that the primary goal of the recognition is to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza and create a path toward peace.
