Ali Larijani, representing Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei, arrived in Beirut, holding discussions with various Lebanese factions. His visit aimed to reinforce Iran’s influence, primarily through its support for Hezbollah.
President Joseph Aoun’s meeting with Larijani revealed a complex dynamic. While affirming a desire for cooperation based on mutual respect, Aoun also criticized recent statements from certain Iranian officials, suggesting they were unhelpful.
Aoun stressed the need for an inclusive relationship with Iran, encompassing all Lebanese citizens and not just specific groups. He emphasized that Lebanon serves as a shared homeland for all its people, and the state is responsible for the security of all communities.
He rejected external interference in Lebanon’s internal matters, stressing the need for a stable environment benefiting all citizens.
Aoun warned against the pitfalls of seeking foreign support, asserting that no group should resort to arms or rely on external forces.
He reiterated that the Lebanese armed forces are responsible for national security, viewing any external threat as a challenge for the whole nation, and unity as the key to overcoming it.
Larijani, conveyed greetings from the Iranian President and extended an invitation to President Aoun to visit Tehran, also expressing Iran’s willingness to contribute to Lebanon’s reconstruction efforts. Iran seeks to fortify its connections with Lebanon, supporting national unity and inter-communal harmony.
