Lt. Gen. Eyak Zamir, the IDF Chief of Defence Staff, is pressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a hostage exchange deal, according to recent reports. During a visit, Zamir indicated that the deal is available for the Prime Minister’s review. He stated that the army has created the necessary conditions for the agreement to proceed, with the decision now in Netanyahu’s hands. Zamir’s position mirrors the desire of many Israelis for a comprehensive agreement that would bring hostages home and conclude the conflict. Concurrently, the Defence Minister has sanctioned military plans for the occupation of Gaza City, indicating heavy bombardment and the displacement of civilians. The conflict has resulted in a large number of Palestinian deaths since October 2023, with international organizations raising concerns about famine. Israeli forces have been conducting heavy strikes, demolishing structures, and sending reinforcements into northern Gaza.
