Hong Kong’s national security law has led to the conviction of prominent media tycoon Jimmy Lai. A court has ruled that the 78-year-old founder of the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily is guilty of conspiring with foreign entities and disseminating seditious content. Lai, a long-time critic of Beijing, has maintained his innocence throughout the trial. The judges concluded that Lai had deliberately sought foreign assistance to undermine China’s government and challenge the ruling Communist Party. This conviction has amplified international concerns about the state of press freedom and judicial independence in Hong Kong, a special administrative region that reverted to Chinese control in 1997. The trial, conducted without a jury, was closely watched by Western governments and rights groups. Prosecutors presented evidence including Lai’s interactions with US officials and content published by Apple Daily. The gravity of the charges means Lai could face a life sentence for collusion with foreign forces, with sedition carrying a potential two-year jail term. His sentencing will be determined in a future hearing. Apple Daily ceased operations in 2021 after authorities froze its assets and arrested its staff. Lai, who has been in custody since 2020, is already imprisoned for fraud and convictions related to protest activities. His physical condition has reportedly deteriorated, prompting concerns from his family.
