Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has sent a clear message to Iran, stating that no group within Lebanon is permitted to possess weapons or rely on foreign backing. This strong stance was communicated during a meeting with Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s top security body.
The president’s statement followed the Lebanese cabinet’s approval of a US-supported roadmap, designed to disarm Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran, in accordance with the 2006 UN Security Council resolution. Iran has voiced criticism of this plan. This article explores the background of the Lebanese president.
Joseph Khalil Aoun: Lebanon’s Commando President
Joseph Khalil Aoun, born on January 10, 1964, is not only the 14th president of Lebanon but also a stern military figure. Prior to assuming the presidency on January 9, 2025, he held the position of commander of the Lebanese army. Aoun’s military career began in 1983 during the Lebanese Civil War, with training stints in the US, Syria, and Lebanon.
Training in Counter-Terrorism
He further honed his skills through counter-terrorism training in the US in 2008 and in Lebanon in 2013. During the 1990 Elimination War, Aoun served as a lieutenant in the commando regiment. After the death of his leader, Aoun took command, demonstrating his leadership in a crisis.
Political Career
Aoun’s political profile gained prominence in 2022, when Samir Geagea, leader of the Lebanese Forces party, endorsed him for the presidency. Aoun also garnered support from Qatar, the US, France, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. As president, Aoun conveys a firm message of rejecting foreign influence, ensuring the army’s sole control of weaponry, and prioritizing Lebanon’s sovereignty.
