A major earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula has led to widespread tsunami warnings. The 8.8 magnitude earthquake generated waves that have already impacted Hokkaido, Japan. The initial wave height was recorded at 30 cm (12 inches). Evacuations are in progress in Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, and parts of Japan. Tsunami sirens sounded in Alaska, Hawaii, and New Zealand. Guam and Micronesia are also under a tsunami watch. Residents in coastal areas are advised to take precautions and heed warnings.
