A new wave of National Guard troops is headed to Los Angeles, as President Trump has ordered an additional 2,000 troops to the city. This augments the initial deployment of 2,000 troops, intended to support ICE and federal law enforcement amid protests. The Department of Defense confirmed the directive. This move comes as the state of California challenges the deployments in court, claiming they are unconstitutional. The White House responded by criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has criticized the federal government’s move, calling it an abuse of authority. He stated the order disregards Governor Newsom’s authorization and violates the 10th Amendment. Governor Newsom has accused Trump of seeking to ‘take over a state militia.’ The protests are a result of ICE raids in the city, leading to the arrest of undocumented immigrants.
