In a noteworthy development for India’s burgeoning defense industrial base, Lockheed Martin has proposed establishing a C-130J Super Hercules production facility within the nation. This marks a significant precedent, as it signifies the first time the American defense manufacturer is willing to set up a full overseas production line for this versatile aircraft. The proposition was unveiled on December 9th, following the conclusion of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India, a trip focused on enhancing defense collaboration.
Lockheed Martin has identified India as the optimal location for its first international production center. This strategic move aligns with the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) plan to induct 80 new tactical lift transport aircraft. The company is convinced that the C-130J Super Hercules is an ideal fit for the IAF’s needs, highlighting its proven reliability across more than 20 nations, including its current deployment by the IAF. The Indian Air Force already operates 12 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.
Company representatives have indicated that the IAF’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) initiative provides a significant pathway for Lockheed Martin to “build its footprint and strengthen its base in India.” This commitment to co-production outside the US signifies a deep strategic engagement with the Indian market. In preparation for the MTA bid, Lockheed Martin has formed a partnership with Tata Advanced Systems. The IAF had previously issued a Request for Information in 2022 to identify suitable replacements for its aging An-32 and Il-76 fleets. The procurement of approximately 80 aircraft is expected to receive official go-ahead in the near future. The MTA program also sees competition from Embraer’s KC-390 Millennium and Airbus’s A400M. The C-130J Super Hercules is a globally recognized workhorse, with a total of over 560 units delivered to operators in 23 countries.
