NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte revealed that Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs on India over Russian oil purchases is significantly affecting Moscow. Rutte asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought an explanation from Russia about its strategy concerning Ukraine, because India is facing the consequences of the tariffs. The US had imposed a 25% tariff, followed by an additional 25% penalty on India for its continued purchase of Russian oil. Trump said that India was supporting Russia’s attacks on Ukraine through this purchase. Trump noted that the US and India are negotiating to address trade barriers. He said he looked forward to speaking with Modi, expecting a successful outcome. Prime Minister Modi responded that the trade negotiations would unlock the potential of the India-US partnership, calling the nations ‘close friends and natural partners.’ Modi added that teams are working to conclude these discussions soon and he looked forward to speaking with Trump to ensure a better future.
