Deepu Chandra Das, a Hindu man, has become the latest victim of mob violence in Bangladesh after being lynched and burned to death in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, on allegations of blasphemy. The horrific incident, which occurred on Thursday night, has been captured in a viral video, drawing widespread condemnation.
The violence unfolded in the Dublia Para area, where Das, a garment factory worker, was accused of uttering derogatory remarks concerning Prophet Muhammad. Accounts suggest that an enraged mob quickly formed, bypassing any formal inquiry or evidence. Das was severely beaten with sticks and died from his injuries. The mob then allegedly tied his body to a tree and set it on fire, a chilling act confirmed by local police who identified the victim.
Political figures have voiced their strong disapproval of the killing. The West Bengal BJP has condemned the act and highlighted similarities to past violence, framing it as a consequence of unchecked religious fanaticism. They have raised alarm bells regarding the safety of minority groups in the face of such extremism.
The killing takes place against a backdrop of significant civil unrest in Bangladesh, following the demise of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi. The ongoing protests have seen instances of vandalism and attacks, exacerbating fears for the safety and security of religious minorities. The volatile environment is further compounded by anti-India slogans during some demonstrations, reflecting a broader regional unease.
