Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Namibia, concluding his five-nation tour. The visit is significant as it’s the first by an Indian PM in approximately three decades. The welcome ceremony at the State House was followed by a wreath-laying at the National War Memorial, ‘Heroes’ Acre.’ Discussions with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah focused on strengthening cooperation in digital technology, defense, security, agriculture, healthcare, education, and critical minerals. Ways to enhance trade, energy, and petrochemical linkages were also explored. PM Modi acknowledged Namibia’s assistance in Project Cheetah. He was warmly greeted by Namibian officials and members of the Indian diaspora upon his arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport. The visit aims to reinforce the historical ties between India and Namibia, rooted in India’s early support for Namibian independence. Bilateral trade between India and Namibia in 2023-24 reached USD 814 million, and India has made significant investments in the country. A key example of cooperation is the transfer of cheetahs from Namibia to India. Both nations are exploring opportunities to expand cooperation in mining, energy, health, agriculture, and infrastructure, including ongoing negotiations for a Preferential Trade Arrangement.
