In response to growing concerns about online fraud and money laundering, Nepal has imposed an immediate ban on the Telegram messaging app. The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) issued a notice directing all telecom providers to block the platform. The notice stated that the app was being used for fraudulent activities and money laundering, but no specific data was provided. This marks Nepal as the latest nation to restrict Telegram, an app known for its encrypted messaging. Vietnam had previously taken similar steps due to the spread of harmful content and ‘reactionary activities.’ The ban follows the discovery of Telegram’s use during a cyberattack on a significant online transaction system used by Nepali banks. With millions of internet users, Nepal is addressing the wider global debate about Telegram’s security and data protection practices.
