Sushila Karki, a former student of BHU, has been sworn in as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister after a period of unrest. She learned the fundamentals of politics in Varanasi. She holds an MA in Political Science from BHU, which she completed in 1975. Professor Deepak Malik, who knew Karki well, noted that Varanasi was a hub for the anti-monarchy movement in Nepal for many years. From 1940 to 1980, BP Koirala led the movement against the monarchy from Varanasi. Nepali Congress youth leaders, including GP Koirala, Shailaja Acharya, and Durga Prasad Subedi, were also active in raising awareness against the monarchy.
