Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah has voiced his support for an interim government to oversee new elections in Nepal, endorsing former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to lead this transition. He praised her understanding, wisdom, and ability to unite. Through a social media message, Shah addressed Gen Z and all Nepalese citizens, urging them to remain calm and patient during this critical period, as the nation moves towards a better future. Shah further mentioned that the country is currently governed by an interim government that will organize fresh elections. He advised those seeking leadership positions to await the elections, highlighting that the country needs their long-term commitment and integrity, achievable through elections. He called for the formation of an interim government and the immediate dissolution of Parliament to protect the revolution initiated by Gen Z.
Violent protests have continued in Nepal for three days, resulting in 30 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. These protests, primarily led by Gen Z, began on August 8, with demands to lift the social media ban and address government corruption. Protesters subsequently vandalized and set fire to the private residence of outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in Balkot, Bhaktapur, leading to his resignation and reported departure from the country.
