Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has adjusted his approach to the Gaza conflict, with the release of hostages now taking precedence over the previously stated goal of completely defeating Hamas. Speaking at a Shin Bet security agency site, Netanyahu highlighted new opportunities following Israeli military operations, particularly in relation to securing the hostages’ freedom. He acknowledged the necessity of resolving the Gaza issue and defeating Hamas but implied a shift in priorities towards the hostages. This marks a significant change from his prior stance, where achieving ‘total victory’ over Hamas was paramount. Netanyahu’s altered focus arrives amid growing pressure from the families of the hostages and international calls for a resolution. Former US President Donald Trump has urged for a deal for the hostages. A proposal by US envoy Steve Witkoff suggests a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages, though Hamas is seeking stronger guarantees for a permanent end to the conflict.
