Major General Amir Hatami has been appointed as the new Army Chief of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a decision made by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei amidst the escalating conflict in the Middle East. This move is a direct consequence of Israeli strikes targeting Iranian officials, which prompted Iran to retaliate with a missile attack on Israel. Hatami’s previous role as Iran’s Defence Minister from 2013 to 2021, coupled with his perceived dedication and expertise, were cited as reasons for his promotion. The change sees him replacing Lieutenant General Seyyed Abdolrahim Mousavi. In addition, Major General Mohammad Pakpour has been assigned as the Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC, highlighting significant shifts in Iran’s military command structure.
