Supporters of Sheikh Hasina created a disturbance outside the Bangladesh Consulate in New York. During the protest, Mahfuz Alam, an advisor in the Yunus government, was attacked with eggs and stones. The consulate itself was also damaged.
Amidst the chaos caused by Awami League activists, Mahfuz Alam was moved to a safe location. He was in New York to attend a program commemorating the anniversary of the coup in Bangladesh. The assault on Alam was in response to a recent decision concerning Sheikh Hasina.
The government of Bangladesh has decided to prevent the broadcasting of any of Sheikh Hasina’s messages. Media outlets that publish or print her messages will also face consequences. Mahfuz Alam is the head of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the Yunus government.
Reportedly, as Mahfuz Alam arrived at the consulate for an event, supporters of the Awami League entered the building chanting slogans. They were heard shouting ‘Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.’ They initially protested against Mahfuz’s presence, which then turned into unrest.
When attempts were made to remove them, the activists became violent, throwing stones and eggs at Mahfuz, and then vandalizing the consulate.
The organizers called for assistance from the American police. Mahfuz Alam was eventually taken from the consulate to a secure hotel. He is scheduled to stay in the United States until August 27.
In light of the upcoming general elections, the Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina, is actively campaigning. Recently, Awami League members held demonstrations in Dhaka and surrounding areas. They are also active in Britain.
The protest in New York serves as a signal of their increased activities. General elections in Bangladesh are expected to be held in February 2026. The Election Commission has stated that Sheikh Hasina’s party can participate in the elections.
