The family of Talal Abdo Mahdi, allegedly murdered by Nimisha Priya, has refused to accept blood money, known as ‘Diyah,’ from the Kerala nurse’s family. They are instead demanding the enforcement of ‘God’s law,’ or Qisas, which stipulates retaliation in kind. Talal’s brother, Abdel Fateh Mahdi, spoke with BBC Arabic, rejecting Priya’s claims of abuse and mistreatment, stating these were never presented in Yemeni court. He emphasized the unforgivable nature of the murder, dismemberment, and concealment of Talal’s body. The family is resolute in its pursuit of justice, rejecting any compromise. Yemeni law provides for the option of blood money, which could lead to a pardon, but the family has declined this option. Nimisha Priya, who was sentenced to death, had a business partnership and a marital relationship with Talal. Her execution has been postponed following diplomatic and religious interventions.
