Amidst rising global tensions, North Korea has established a clandestine military base. According to a report from an American think tank, the Kim Jong-un regime has strategically positioned nine nuclear missiles and their launchers at this secret facility. This base is designed to be a launch point for potential attacks on opposing nations during times of conflict. The base is located in Sinpung-dang, a site just 27 kilometers from the border of China.
The North Korean government has yet to issue any official statements regarding the existence or purpose of this base. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute estimates that North Korea possesses approximately 50 nuclear weapons, which could have devastating consequences.
Understanding the Sinpung-dang Base: Situated near an island within North Pyongan, the base is a short 27 kilometers from China and roughly 7,000 kilometers from the United States. It is also within close proximity to US allies Japan and South Korea, located within a 100-kilometer radius. The base has been speculated to be a secret base associated with China.
The American think tank’s findings indicate that the base is considerable in size and could potentially house at least 15 missiles. Information regarding the features of the base, including the existence of an underground system, has not been disclosed by North Korea.
Construction began in 2004, and the base became operational in 2014. It has been continuously manned by North Korean military personnel since that time. The base encompasses an area of about 22 square kilometers.
Strategic Considerations: The base’s placement in the mountainous region of North Korea, near China, suggests strategic planning. Analysts suggest that North Korea’s leader ensured a high degree of caution in the construction of the base. The rationale is that, in the event of war, the United States would be hesitant to directly target the base.
An attack on the base would likely have repercussions for China, which could potentially lead to China’s involvement in a conflict against the United States, thereby escalating the war. Therefore, the secret base in Sinpung-dang was established for this purpose.
Originally concealed with tree branches, the base is no longer camouflaged.
North Korea’s Rivals: North Korea’s primary adversary is South Korea. Other notable adversaries include Japan and the United States. In the event of a conflict, North Korea may also face opposition from the Philippines, as the United States, along with South Korea, the Philippines, and Japan, have formed a strong alliance in Asia.
North Korea has developed long-range weaponry capable of striking the United States. Kim Jong-un’s sister has explicitly stated that North Korea will not relinquish its nuclear arsenal.
