Pakistan has unveiled a new, powerful military leadership role: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), with Field Marshal Asim Munir appointed as the first incumbent. This strategic appointment centralizes command across all military branches – Army, Navy, and Air Force – and grants oversight of the National Strategic Command, responsible for the nation’s nuclear capabilities.
A key feature of this new role, established under the 27th Amendment, is the removal of a retirement age. Unlike the previous requirement for Army Chiefs to retire at 64, the CDF position is secured for a five-year term, with the government holding the authority to grant multiple five-year extensions. This reform aims to ensure continuity and potentially longer tenures in top military leadership.
President Asif Ali Zardari approved the recommendation to appoint Munir as CDF, concurrently with his position as Chief of Army Staff (COAS). This dual appointment positions Munir as the most powerful military officer in Pakistan’s history, holding both the prestigious Field Marshal rank and the consolidated command of the armed forces.
The decision follows a period of intense discussion regarding the potential for increased military power. The establishment of the CDF role supersedes the previous Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, indicating a move towards a unified military command structure.
Separately, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu’s service has been extended by two years, effective March 19, 2026. The President offered his congratulations to both appointed officers.
