India has delivered a powerful message to Pakistan at the UN, calling for an immediate halt to “grave” human rights violations and the ongoing suppression of protests in illegally occupied parts of Kashmir. India’s First Secretary at the UN Mission detailed the alleged killing of numerous innocent civilians by Pakistani forces and their affiliates who were exercising their rights.
“We call upon Pakistan to stop the grave and ongoing human rights violations in the areas illegally occupied by it,” the Indian representative declared at the General Assembly, describing the situation as an “open revolt” against “Pakistan’s military occupation, repression, brutality and illegal exploitation of resources.” This statement directly challenged Pakistan’s narrative on Kashmir.
The Indian delegate also criticized Pakistan’s repeated, unfounded accusations against India at the UN, labeling them as “repetitive allegations and lies” that fail to alter the truth. She characterized Pakistan’s stance as “double speak and hypocrisy,” unsuitable for serious international deliberation. India presented the active involvement of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in democratic processes as proof of India’s commitment to democracy and the region’s progress.
India also corrected Pakistan’s historical interpretation of UN Security Council Resolution 47, which, according to India, ordered Pakistan’s withdrawal from Kashmir, not a plebiscite, and is still being violated. The union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were firmly stated to be “integral and inalienable parts of India.” India’s adherence to human rights principles, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy, is upheld through its constitutional provisions, progressive legislation, and an active judiciary and human rights commissions.
