The political climate in Pakistan is marked by the growing influence of General Asim Munir. His recent promotion to Field Marshal by the Shehbaz government has sparked speculation about his potential bid for the presidency, which has put the current President, Asif Ali Zardari, in a precarious position.
In response, Zardari has appointed Murtaza Solangi, a seasoned journalist and former interim information minister, as his spokesperson. This move suggests that Zardari is aware of the challenges to his position and is working to strengthen his influence.
Solangi confirmed his appointment on X, stating, “A small personal news, I have been appointed as the spokesperson to the President of Pakistan. I will assume my new responsibilities from tomorrow. Thank you.”
Pakistan has witnessed numerous instances of army chiefs seizing power through coups. However, the Shehbaz government appears to be adopting a different strategy, potentially offering Asim Munir the presidency as a political maneuver to protect the Prime Minister’s office.
The government’s actions, from promoting Asim Munir to Field Marshal to arranging his meeting with Trump in America, demonstrate a concerted effort. The increasing power of Asim Munir presents a considerable challenge to Asif Ali Zardari.
Zardari’s decision to appoint a spokesperson will allow him to engage more effectively with the public and ensure clear communication during emergencies. Solangi formerly managed over 3,000 staff across 64 broadcasting units at Radio Pakistan (2008-2013). He also played a key role in establishing relationships with global broadcasters such as Voice of America, China Radio International, and Deutsche Welle.
Solangi also achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Pakistani to be elected as the Vice President and later the Acting President of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. His contributions to the media and public service were recognized in 2011 with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz from the President of Pakistan.
