
Ali Khan Mahmoodabad, Associate Professor of Ashoka University, has moved the Suprem Court. He was arrested on Sunday, May 18, 2025 after posting a post on social media in connection with Operation Sindoor. In this case, on behalf of Ali Khan, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appeared, which was placed before Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gawai. CJI Gawai has assured to hear the case in a day or two.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on the petition challenging the arrest of Ali Khan Mahmudabad, Associate Professor of Ashoka University and head of the Department of Political Sciences. Professor Mahmudabad was arrested by the Haryana Police on 18 May due to the comments made on social media related to ‘Operation Sindoor’. The case was presented by senior advocate Kapil Sibal in the Supreme Court on Monday.
A bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Christ noted the arguments of senior advocate Kapil Sibal on behalf of the Associate Professor and said that the petitions would be heard on Tuesday or Wednesday. Sibal argued that his client has been arrested for giving patriotic statements and requested to list the case for immediate hearing. The Chief Justice said that it will be listed tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

Professor Mahmudabad was arrested on the basis of a complaint of Yogesh Jatheri, General Secretary of BJP Yuva Morcha in Haryana. Apart from this, a separate FIR was also lodged against her by Renu Bhatia, chairman of Haryana State Women’s Commission. The Commission alleged that Mahmudabad’s comments were derogatory to women officials of Indian armed forces, especially Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyika Singh, and could obstruct communal harmony.
Mahmudabad, in its social media post, termed the participation of female officers in the press briefing of ‘Operation Sindoor’ as “symbolic”, but also said that if the ground reality did not change, it would only be a show. He appealed to right -wing commentators to raise the same voice for the victims of violence against the Muslim community, such as mob lynching and illegal bulldozing.

The Faculty Association of Ashoka University has demanded immediate release of the professor, calling this action baseless. Condemning the arrest, many political leaders, academics and activists have also raised their voice, including AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and CPI (M) leader Subhashini Ali.
