At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit held in Tianjin, China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a speech that indirectly addressed Pakistan on the issue of terrorism and also criticized the United States for its protectionist, unilateralist, and hegemonic policies. He also highlighted India’s consistent zero-tolerance approach to cross-border terrorism, separatism, and extremism.
In his opening remarks, PM Modi expressed his honor in addressing the distinguished gathering in Tianjin, a city representing progress and connectivity. On behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India, he extended greetings to the leaders and representatives. He also thanked President Xi for hosting the summit and for the gracious hospitality. The SCO has grown from six to ten full members, representing about half of the world’s population and a large part of the global economy. India is committed to the organization’s role in promoting regional stability, security, and prosperity.
He emphasized the significant role the SCO has played in strengthening cooperation and mutual ties in the Asian region over the past 24 years. India has consistently played a positive role as an active member, with its approach to the SCO based on the core principles of Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity.
The Prime Minister, without directly naming Pakistan, spoke about the major challenges of terrorism, separatism, and extremism. He said that terrorism is a shared challenge for all of humanity. No country or society is safe from it, and therefore India has emphasized solidarity in the fight against terrorism, with the SCO playing an important role. This year, India has led the Joint Information Operations, taking the initiative to combat terrorist organizations, and has spoken out against terror financing. He expressed gratitude for the support in this regard.
Modi stated that India has been suffering from the scourge of terrorism for the last 40 years, leading to the loss of many lives and rendering many children orphans. He cited the recent heinous act of terrorism in Pahalgam and thanked the friendly nations that supported India during this difficult time. This attack was an open challenge to every country and person who believes in humanity. It is natural to ask whether open support for terrorism by certain countries can be acceptable. We must state clearly and in one voice that no double standards on terrorism will be accepted.
