A horrific mass shooting at a hostel in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, has resulted in 11 deaths and 14 injuries. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the tragic event occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Saulsville Hostel. Shockingly, three minors – two boys aged 3 and 12, and a 16-year-old girl – are among the deceased. The shooting took place at an unlicensed liquor establishment (shebeen) shortly after 4:15 am, with police receiving the alert around 6 am. Detectives and specialized units are investigating the motive behind the attack and are actively searching for three individuals believed to be responsible. The SAPS spokesperson commented on the ongoing problem of illegal liquor premises, stating that many have been raided and individuals arrested for unlawful sales. This incident adds to a worrying trend of escalating gun violence in South Africa, following a similar mass shooting in Cape Town last month that claimed seven lives and underscored a growing crisis.
