Early morning violence erupted within an Ecuadorian prison, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals and injuries to others. The conflict was sparked by a clash between rival factions, Los Lobos and Sao Box. Gunfire and explosions were reported, triggering widespread panic. The riot led to the killing of a prison guard and the abduction of police officers. In the ensuing disorder, numerous inmates managed to escape. Local police immediately commenced a search operation to recapture the escapees, with a few already back in custody. Authorities have launched an investigation to uncover the root causes of the riot, and establish security protocols. Most of the victims were members of the Los Choneros gang.
