Moscow has accused Ukraine of launching a drone strike targeting a presidential site near the Valdai residence in Russia’s Novgorod region. Russian officials claim that while air defenses thwarted the attack, preventing damage or casualties, the incident is a grave act of ‘state terrorism.’ Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that this escalation may force Russia to reconsider its involvement in peace negotiations.
Russia has warned of retaliatory measures, stating that such actions will not go unanswered. Lavrov highlighted that the alleged attack occurred during a period of active diplomatic engagement, further complicating the situation. The Valdai compound is a well-known presidential retreat in northwestern Russia, although Russian officials have not confirmed if President Putin was present during the incident.
Ukraine has categorically denied the accusations, with President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissing the claims as a ‘total lie.’ He accused Moscow of fabricating the story to undermine diplomatic efforts, particularly those following his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump. This meeting reportedly yielded a revised peace framework, including a significant US security guarantee for Ukraine.
Zelensky articulated on X that Russia is employing dangerous rhetoric to sabotage the progress made in diplomatic endeavors with the Trump administration. Despite the allegations, Russia states its commitment to negotiations remains, although its overall position is under review. Lavrov stressed that the alleged drone attack is viewed as a major escalation demanding a response, even as dialogue channels are preserved.
The alleged incident was a topic of discussion between President Putin and President Trump during a phone call. Russian state media reported that Putin informed Trump of the reassessment of Russia’s peace stance following the alleged attack. Russian media also suggested Trump was ‘shocked’ by the account, while the White House offered a brief comment on the ‘positive’ nature of the call. Meanwhile, military operations are ongoing, with orders issued to intensify efforts in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region. The dispute over the drone incident has intensified volatility in the ongoing peace process.
